Н. Н. Болгов, монография «Женщина в ранней Византии» и серия «Мир поздней Античности»
Статья рассматривает деятельность профессора Белгородского университета Николая Николаевича Болгова. Первая часть статьи посвящена недавней монографии Н. Н. Болгова «Женщина в Ранней Византии». Показывается, что ввиду слабой и устаревшей методологии книга не соответствует стандартам современной науки. Кроме того, раскрывается тот факт, что большая часть книги совпадает с текстами аспирантских диссертаций, написанных под руководством Н. Н. Болгова в БелГУ.
Вторая часть статьи рассматривает выходящую под редакцией Н. Н. Болгова серию «Мир поздней античности». Показывается, что издающиеся в ней публикации источников являются переводами текста и критического аппарата английских изданий этих памятников. При этом, переводы выполнены на крайне низком уровне и часто сильно искажают смысл оригинала. Указывается, что как минимум в двух случаях Н. Н. Болгов публиковал переводы англоязычных исследований под собственным именем, не указывая истинного автора публикации.

Nikolay Bolgov, The Woman in Late Antiquity and The World of the Late Antiquity Series
The article discusses publications of Nikolay Bolgov, Professor at Belgorod State University. The article primarily focuses on his monograph The Woman in Late Antiquity and the series The World of the Late Antiquity, which he publishes as an editor.
The analysis of The Woman in Late Antiquity shows that the book is methodologically fawed as it employs an essentialist view on women and disregards the entire tradition of Gender Studies and related disciplines. However, the core problem of the book is the fact that its major part was initially defended as two PhD dissertations of his students.
On a general level, misappropriation seems to pervade the academic activities of prof. Bolgov. A study of titles published in The World of the Late Antiquity series can provide ample evidence of it. The declared aim of the series is publishing studies related to Late Antiquity and translation of the authors from this period. The typical translation published in the series is merely an unauthorized translation of an English language edition, including the introductory article, commentary and bibliography. The texts are riddled with mistranslations and demonstrate that the person responsible for it had a limited understanding of English and completely disregarded the Greek or Latin originals. The article locates underlying English-language prototypes for the majority of translations published in the series, the used texts include Jeffreys’ edition of Malalas, Coyne’s edition of Priscian, Cameron’s and Shea’s editions of Corippus, and some others. In at least two instances a part of these studies has been published by Prof. Bolgov as his own article in Russian.
