Two articles of the treatise De statu et planctu ecclesiae<\/em> by Alvarus Pelagius, a canonist of the 13th \u2014 14th centuries, are dedicated to denouncing the vices of university masters and students. The author enumerated different kinds of sins which, in his opinion, were typical for members of\u00a0the community of\u00a0scholars. The text of Pelagius presents a compilation of\u00a0numerous references to the Holy Scripture and to the sources of canon and civil law (such as the Decretum Gratiani, the Decretals, the Liber Sextus, the Institutes of Justinian, the Digest). But in a number of cases, the canonist also included in the text certain observations that were familiar to him from his personal experience or from eyewitness accounts. In the present publication, these fragments of the treatise are fully translated into Russian for the first time. This remarkable source gives historians a rare opportunity to investigate different aspects of self-reflection of the medieval scholarly community.
