By&nbsp;content, they can be&nbsp;divided into several\ntypes, but for the current article the most interesting are the so-called Sagas\nabout the bishops. Among those, one can distinguish the sagas about Thorlak\nThorhallsson (1133\u20131193, bishop of&nbsp;the diocese in&nbsp;Skalaholt since 1178), one of\nthe most important figures in&nbsp;the Icelandic history. He&nbsp;was the only of\nthe Icelandic clergymen and hierarchs whose merits were recognized by&nbsp;the Roman\nCatholic Church&nbsp;\u2014 on&nbsp;January&nbsp;14, 1984&nbsp;he was formally canonized. The most\ncomplete information about him is&nbsp;contained in&nbsp;Saga \u00deorl\u00e1ks biskups hin elzta\nand Oddaverja-\u00de\u00e1ttr, published in&nbsp;the collection Byskupa so\u031cgur. Saga \u00deorl\u00e1ks\nbiskups hin elzta was probably written as&nbsp;an&nbsp;analogue of&nbsp;the European\nlives of&nbsp;saints, in&nbsp;order to&nbsp;justify the sanctity of&nbsp;Bishop Thorlak for\nthe his subsequent canonization. Oddaverja-\u00de\u00e1ttr might have been created for a\ndifferent purpose&nbsp;\u2014 one of&nbsp;the possible motives was to&nbsp;support Thorlak in&nbsp;his\nconflict with the head of&nbsp;the clan Oddi&nbsp;\u2014 J\u00f3n Loftsson. The first\npublication of&nbsp;the sagas was in&nbsp;1858; the last was in&nbsp;2013. It&nbsp;is&nbsp;thus\nobvious that the sources are still of&nbsp;interest to&nbsp;the researchers.
