\u201cOaths to\nGovernments\u201d in the Time of Troubles<\/h2>\n\n\n

The Time of\nTroubles is a period of dramatic change in traditional institutions. In this\narticle, the Time of Troubles is considered as a precedent of a deep\nsystemic crisis, encompassing all spheres of life. At this time, the oath is\nnot just a ritual, repeated every few decades with the change of the sovereign.\nIn the Time of Troubles, the institution of the oath is overgrown with many\nadditional functions. In the conditions of constant change of authority, the\noath is an effective means of integration into new life realities. The oath\nbecomes one of the tools by which the authorities try to justify their\nlegitimacy. This is a bilateral process because the oath as a text tries to\nlegitimise the authority of the ruler as convincingly as possible, while the oath\nas an act serves as an actual confirmation of the truth and legitimacy of this\nauthority, which can be an important argument in the subsequent power struggle.\nWhat social functions does the oath carry out in the Time of Troubles? Having\nexamined the texts of the oaths of allegiance, one can infer that the interests\nof the two sides differ: the authorities want to prove their legitimacy, to\nacquire more supporters and to prevent their betrayal, namely to keep them from\nswitching to the rival\u2019s side when struggling for authority; common people, on\nthe other hand, are trying to protect themselves and their property and, at the\nsame time, to get material benefits. Thus, in the Time of Troubles during\nthe destruction of established institutions, the oath is in many ways not only\na confirmation but also a source of authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
