The\nRespiratory System of the Blessed and the Acoustics in Paradise: Commentaries\non the Sentences as Sources for the History of Medieval Science<\/h2>\n\n\n

In the\nthirteenth century, the writing of commentaries on the Sentences of Peter\nLombard became a mandatory part of theological training. Nevertheless, the\ninterests of commentators were not limited to purely theological topics. As the\ngenre of commentary evolved, problems of natural philosophy increasingly\nattracted the attention of these authors. This explains the importance of\ncommentaries on the Sentences for research in the history of medieval science.\nIn particular, these sources enable us to explore the interactions between\nscientific knowledge and Christian doctrine. This paper aims to demonstrate the\nrelevance of this statement through a particular case-study: the discussions\nabout the Empyrean Heaven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto medieval theologians, this celestial sphere, which is immobile, invisible\nand unknown to astronomers, will become the dwelling place of the angels and of\nthe blessed after the Last Judgment. Despite of the \u201ctheological\u201d nature of the\nEmpyrean Heaven, commentators tried to integrate it into a scientific picture\nof the world. In keeping with the theory that the terrestrial world depends on\nthe influence of celestial bodies \u2014 a fundamental theory for medieval\nnatural philosophy \u2014 the commentators attributed to the Empyrean Heaven\nthe power over inferior bodies. Discussing the inhabitants of the Empyrean\nHeaven, they considered the praises of the blessed as a physical phenomenon of\nthe transmission of sound. As the analysis of these commentaries\ndemonstrates, theology and physics influenced each other. The Empyrean Heaven\nobeyed the laws of nature, but the discussions about this sphere considerably\nmodified some scientific theories: for example, the necessity of motion for the\naction of one body on another or the diffusion of sound due to the increasing\nand decreasing density of the medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
