Review of the Translation of C.H. Haskins’ The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century, 2025
The review focuses on the Russian translation of Charles Homer Haskins’ The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century, published in 2025. The authors analyze the quality of the translation, paying particular attention to the balance between accuracy and clarity of the original text. Both the general merits of the edition and specific shortcomings of the translation are discussed. The article examines in detail several cases of literal adherence to English syntax, which in some instances leads to ambiguity or disruption of logical connections. Errors in the rendering of certain names, as well as inaccuracies in the reference apparatus, are noted. At the same time, the review emphasizes the translators’ high level of linguistic and scholarly culture and the importance of their work, which for the first time makes one of the key texts of Western medieval studies available to Russian readers.
