Book review: Korogodina Maria Vladimirovna. The Rules of the Synod of Constantinople, 1276, Moscow: Publishing House of the Higher School of Economics, 2025

Maria Vladimirovna Korogodina’s book is dedicated to an important event in the history of the Russian Church and culture of the 13th century — the answers of the Patriarchal Synod of Constantinople in 1276 to the questions of Theognost, Bishop of Sarai about the peculiarities of church life and religious life under the conditions of Tatar-Mongol rule. The book examines in detail the history of the issue, the time and circumstances of the translation of the monument into the Slavic language. All currently known versions of the rules have been published according to the totality of the lists and commented on. Despite a number of comments and objections, Korogodina’s monograph is a valuable contribution to the study of this topic.

Keywords: handwritten tradition of rules; specifics of Russian church life in the 13th century; Synod of 1276; Tatar-Mongol yoke.
