Historia Ierosolimitana of Baldric of Bourgueil: A Part of the Fourth Book (The Crusaders on the Road to Jerusalem)

This publication is prepared as a part of a larger project, which aims at translating Baldric of Bourgueil’s Historia Ierosolimitana into Russian started in 2017. First publicaion: Khvalkov E. “Historia Ierosolimitana” of Baldric of Bourgueil (the prologue and the beginning of the first book) // Vox medii aevi. 2017. Vol. 1(1). P. 254–272. URL: https://voxmediiaevi.com/vol-1-khvalkov. The critical edition published by S. Biddlecombe was the main source for the translation. A part of the fourth book, presented here to the reader, narrates the final episode of the First Crusade, i. e. the breakthrough to Jerusalem in spring 1099; it is provided with topographical and chronological outline. The last but not least component of the publication to be mentioned is the philological point; the commentary includes a summary overview of various quotations and intertextual allusions both to the Holy Bible and Greek and Latin authors. Like most his contemporary scholars, Baldric was no average chronicler but a refine connoisseur who used all his knowledge to raise his future work to a new level. It was the very subject of the story, namely the liberation of the Jerusalem Temple from Muslim occupation, that required solemn and subtle style of writing.
