The Image of the Middle Ages in the School Education of the Western Balkan Countries at the Beginning of the 21st Century
The article analyses the image of medieval history in the school education of the Western Balkans. The countries of the region include the Republic of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of of North Macedonia, the Republic of Serbia, and the so-called “Republic of Kosovo”. The study examines the key historical myths of the region’s medieval history through an analysis of memory wars related to the Western Balkans’ historical mythology and the interaction of global, regional, and national histories as they are represented in the school textbooks. The present study identifies common features and differences of curricula in the named countries, their distinct perceptions of world and regional histories, as well as the variations in temporal borders and key subjects of the Middle Ages. The author concludes that the national history of the Western Balkan countries fits carefully into the context of global — primarily European — history, by drawing comparisons between a region, a country, and pan-European processes.
