The Description of Rome from the Liber Chronicarum by Hartmann Schedel. A Translation and a Commentary

Here the first Russian translation of a fragment of the Liber Chronicarum by Hartmann Schedel (1440–1514) is being published, containing the description of Rome, its seven hills and both Antique and Christian monuments standing there. In the accompanying commentary the Schedel’s main source is being revealed, namely the book Roma Instaurata by an Italian humanist Flavio Biondo. The Chronicle’s text is also illustrated with an engraving of the Eternal city, representing a number of the famous monuments mentioned by Schedel.

Key words: Flavio Biondo; Hartmann Schedel; Liber Chronicarum; Nuremberg Chronicle; topography of Rome.
