What’s Love Got to Do with It? Our Middle Ages, Ourselves
This essay, a peculiar self-portrait of Richard Utz on historiographical background, opens his collection of essays “Medievalism: a Manifesto”. That volume, this chapter included, is dedicated to the demonstration of the influence that historian’s fate has on his research topic. Utz proves that every medievalist is a cultural product of his or her era and therefore is unable to get rid of the images of the Middle Ages inherent in his or her culture.
