Parallel Middle Ages: Byzantium, the medieval Caucasus (and Ancient Rus’)
The present text is based on a discussion report presented at the conference “Sixth Middle Ages”. It contains some reflections on the situation in medieval studies concerning Byzantium, the medieval Caucasus and Ancient Rus’. The trajectories of the development of medieval studies in each of these areas were different, largely due to political and cultural circumstances. These reasons also determined their differences from the current state of research in West European medieval studies.
