Anatomy of the Prototext, or What Should be the Purpose of the Critical Edition of Medieval Latin Texts in the Digital Age?
The critical edition of original texts is justly hailed as one of the most complicated, refined and important parts of medievalists’ work, for it provides scholars with access to sources and thus underlays almost every single research. For this reason, for a century and a half this field has been a battleground of numerous attempts to define its goals and the best methods appropriate to introduce an ancient or medieval text to the contemporary reader. Obviously, within digital humanities, this debate has recently been reiterated on a completely new level, as new innovative techniques and practices of digital scholarly editing not only helped to find new formats for a critical edition, redefine it and enhance its functionalities, but also to overcome the main methodological schism of the past and formulate a new centre of gravity of the discussion. This essay attempts to sketch out the status quaestionis in the field and to shed light on the most important problems that all recent innovations bring forth for the scholarly community.
