Medieval Studies in Higher Educational Institutions of Yaroslavl

Medieval studies have long found a firm foundation in some Russian regions in the form of academic and educational institutions of various levels. This article deals with organizational formation of courses on history of Europe in Middle Ages in higher educational institutions of Yaroslavl illustrated by activities of some lecturers from the Yaroslavl State Pedagogical University and the Yaroslavl State University in the 19th – 21st centuries. Through much of the 20th century, the K. D. Ushinsky Yaroslavl State Pedagogical University (YSPU) was the main and the only higher school of the region. The staff of the historical department has made a considerable contribution in studying of international relations in early modern and modern periods. A medievalist component of their studies was represented by the analysis of European political history of the Late Middle Ages. The academic specialization of students studying medieval history in YSPU is focused on the history of Christianity. The P. G. Demidov Yaroslavl State University (YSU) has also provided a significant input in formation of the intellectual profile of the Yaroslavl region. Initially, the YSU scholars were interested in political and legal aspects. Today, the main emphasis is laid on the history of culture. The main subjects of bachelors’ qualification papers are connected with the history of Byzantium and Western Europe during the High Middle Ages. The author pays attention to publications of the Yaroslavl medievalists and their participation in various conferences, touches upon formation of world history chairs in both universities and specifies main courses of lectures and discussions.
