Umberto Eco (1932–2016)
Philosopher, semiotician, cultural theorist, writer, literary critic
Latratus canis
One of the main virtues of Umberto Eco as a scholar and a writer is his appreciation for detail. For Eco, detail is not a trifling thing and not simply an occasion to talk about larger issues. His article about latratus canis is a perfect example of this. In it, Eco draws our attention to a seemingly insignificant trait in the treatises of medieval grammarians: the ambiguous position of the dog’s bark in their classifications of signs. Carefully tracing the minute changes in how this Aristotelian example is used in the texts of Augustine, Boethius, Thomas Aquinas, Abelard and Roger Bacon, the author reveals in a few pages the world of medieval semiotics with all if its problems, their origins, and the solutions proposed by the major thinkers of the age. The article translated from English.
Key words: semiotics; classification signs; Abelard; Augustine; Aristotle; Boethius; Roger Bacon; Thomas Aquinas.
