«Historia Ierosolimitana» of Baldric of Bourgueil (the prologue and the beginning of the first book)
This translation comprises the prologue and the beginning of the first book of the Historia Ierosolimitana of Baldric of Bourgueil with the sermon of Pope Urban II at the Council of Clermont, 1095. This translation is based upon the text recited in the critical publication of the source of S. Biddlecombe (Woodbridge, 2014). The Baldric’s writing had been created around 1105, while he had been ruling the abbey of Bourgueil and before he was ordained as bishop of Dol. The first critical edition of the Historia Ierosolimitana was published in the second half of the 19th century (1879); however, that edition was based only on seven manuscripts. Steven Biddlecombe’s edition (2014), which was used for this translation, is based on twenty out of twenty four extant and known manuscripts. The Historia Ierosolimitana consists of a prologue and four books. According to Baldric, it was written in the times when he was almost sixty (the author died in senility remarkable for his epoch – he was eighty-four). The editor noticed two peculiar features of his narrative: first, the use of the concept Historia (in contrast with the Dei Gesta per Francos by Guibert of Nogent or Gesta Francorum of the anonymous author); second, direct speech of the writing’s protagonists, both Christians and Muslims, makes up around twenty-seven percents of the whole text, and this fact sharply distinguishes Historia Ierosolimitana from the contemporary chronicles. Historia Ierosolimitana contains allusions to the writings of Marcus Annaeus Lucanus, Publius Vergilius Maro and Gaius Sallustius Crispus, which highlights the fact that Baldric was familiar with the Ancient Roman literature. Steven Biddlecombe points that Historia Ierosolimitana by Baldric of Bourgueil was widely used by such medieval authors as Ordericus Vitalis, Vincent de Beauvais and Humbert of Romans. All in all, this writing was underestimated in the scholarly literature until recently, and the edition prepared by Steven Biddlecombe was to a great extant meant to make up for this gap. The significance of the Historia Ierosolimitana for studying the history of the First Crusade explains the relevance of the present translation.
